About Us
The Paralegal Society is a professional Members Organisation for Paralegals in England and Wales. The main aim of the Society is to ‘promote and support members of the Paralegal profession’.
The Society is founded on principles of self determination, education, experience and professional conduct, it's a place where Members receive access to support and encouragement to enhance their career from the very beginning to its apex.
The Society - It's all about You!
Our Philosophy and Purpose
The Paralegal Society was founded to SUPPORT ALL MEMBERS of the Paralegal profession. We welcome applications from those starting out in the profession or individuals progressing towards higher qualifications and even those who are still hoping to start their career.
However, we recognised a gap in the current provision for experienced Paralegals already in the profession who were not necessarily pursuing additional academic qualifications.
We understand that not every Paralegal is seeking to train to become a Solicitor or Barrister, many Paralegals are happy with their roles and simply wish to obtain recognition for the knowledge they have and the work they do.
We aim to recognise the many existing Paralegals who have a great deal of experience within a Law firm, a Commercial Organisation or a Public Body or those who are running their own Law firm or Legal consultancy offering unreserved legal services to the public using their qualifications and experience.
Such experienced individuals are already competent and maintain their knowledge and core values by their ongoing commitment to Continuing Professional Development.
The Paralegal Society offers an approved and inexpensive way for these individuals and Organisations to demonstrate to clients and the general public, their competence and legitimacy.
Membership of The Paralegal Society demonstrates status and progression within the profession, through the use of letters after the Member's name or approval to 'Corporate Member' status for their law firm.
Our unique approach has led The Paralegal Society to take a slightly different pathway to other Membership Organisations, whose focus is often on pushing and persuading members to purchase more and more expensive qualifications.
We recognise the merit of education and experience in equal measure but also understand the value of experienced, competent practitioners providing quality legal advice and services, along with excellent Client and Customer service, in-house or to the General Public, while meeting the challenges of professional legal practice in the 21st century.
We also encourage people in other professions, who advise on the law, to consider Membership with The Paralegal Society. Such professionals, may not traditionally think of themselves as Paralegals but their role may fulfil all the criteria we require for Membership.
This may include advisors in Health & Safety Law, Planning and Property Law, In-House teams, Fire Safety, Law lecturers and many others. See more about the meaning of the term Paralegal and this type of Membership HERE
